It is 1905. A revolution has broken out in Russia. The reverberations of the epochal events have also reached Estonia that has not become an independent country yet. The people oppose both Russian Czarism and the Baltic-Germans, a workers' riot breaks out and the authorities try to suppress it, there is blood on the streets, in the countryside the manors are on fire. Indrek who has been expelled from the Maurus' School for denying God and is now trying to make a living in town by giving lessons and writing gets pulled into the revolutionary turmoil. He tries to remain a human being in the midst of the rioting and vandalism, to find justice and logic in these chaotic times when a friend can become an enemy overnight and every person can turn out to be a spy. The whole weight of actions and choices falls on Indrek's shoulders only when he eventually gets back home - to Vargamäe where his mother Mari is suffering and dying and his father Andres is stubbornly and single-mindedly looking for truth and justice in this world.
