The Thunderstorm is an attempt to retell the classical dramatic piece in the language of the young people's culture by using the contemporary visual style and musical rhythms. The scene of action is set in the modern city, the heroes themselves have been appreciably transformed. The opposition of heroine Katerina and the people that surround her reflects an eternal struggle of the forces of light and darkness, the poetry and the prose of life. The Thunderstorm tells the story of love, freedom and right to remain oneself. These themes are important especially for the young audience to which the performance is addressed in the first place.

The Thunderstorm is tough and frank theatre. Its poetry is hidden in the image of Katerina who was thrown in the world of a dull routine as a moonstone. Such solution required the essential distinction between Katerina and her surroundings, that's why Estonian actress Mariya Avdyushko was invited to play this role. "She has the qualities I looked for - Katerina has to be different and in the same time she is the part of this milieu," Mikhail Mokeyev says.

The Thunderstorm is a blazing and striking action in the rhythms of rock'n'roll and techno music. According to the director, "rock'n'roll is a path to the hearts or at least to the ears of young people.
It's like a call-sign, in its own way. The musical rhythm of rock'n'roll is close to the rhythm of heartbeat". The rebellious roots of rock'n'roll genealogy are important for the director.
