Aleksandr Vampilov is one of the few Soviet playwrights whose work does not carry the stamp of hypocrisy of the past era. Like Chekhov, a great paragon to Vampilov throughout his short life, he was free of the aggressive topicality, thus being able to penetrate into the depths of human nature.

The Elder Son is probably Vampilov's most famous play. It tells the story of a silly and funny person, who is full of love and tenderness, compassion and warmth towards all people, but it is only too easy to deceive him and later feel remorse about it.

In the famous film of the same name, made in the 1980s, the lead was played by the unforgettable Jevgeni Leonov, plus the brilliant Mikhail Bojarski and Nikolai Karatchentsev. Dustin Hoffmann recently said he would like to play in the new version of the film, which the Americans plan to make.

The play is staged at the Russian Theatre by the Moscow theatre director Nikolai Krutikov, whom the audiences might remember by his remarkable works - Ivanov and Miss Julie.
