The Comedy of Errors

Author:
William Shakespeare
Director:
Stephen Harper
Translator: Georg Meri.
Artist: Riina Degtjarenko (Estonian Drama Theatre).
Cast: The 23. year of graduates of the Drama School of Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre

From January to March 2007, eleven students of the Drama School of the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre studied in London at Rose Bruford College. Tutored by Stephen Harper they produced a version of Shakespeare's "The Comedy of Errors" which is performed on the stage of Hobuveski.
"The Comedy of Errors" is one of Shakespeare's early plays. In this production Harper added elements of commedia dell'arte and buffoonery. The buffoonery, however, does not mean the traditional ways of making the public laugh as in circus. The producer's aim was to emphasise the aspect in each character that is more sincere, vulnerable and playful - aspects people usually try to hide from each other in fear of being laughed at.
This comedy tells the story of two sets of identical twins who were separated in their childhood after a fatal shipwreck. When they grow up, a chance brings them together in a town, where a case of mistaken identities leads to a series of events.
