I Loved a German

A. H. Tammsaare

Raivo Trass

28. märtsil 2008 Kuressaare Linnateatris
lavastus-pic
The events in the novel I Loved a German (published in 1935) by the Estonian classic Anton Hansen Tammsaare take place in Estonia before World War II. The novel is not only a masterpiece of Estonian psychological realism of the period, but also offers parallels to many questions and problems that are essential today.

Rünno Saaremäe who wrote this play based on Tammsaare's novel thinks that it is actually good that the events in the novel do not take place in some specific period of time - we can see it all happening during some time in the 1920s or 1930s. Perhaps this can be taken as a sign that the author primarily emphasised the human nature and human passions that are timeless and always stay the same although the time and circumstances may change.
