I am My Own Wife, a documentary play by American playwright Doug Wright tells an almost unbelievable story about Charlotte von Mahlsdorf (1928-2002), a German transvestite who ran a museum of furniture and various objects in Berlin in the end of the 19th century thus trying to preserve collective memories and also offer a secret meeting place to people like himself.
Charlotte von Mahlsdorf was a phenomenon: he got pulled into the political turmoil of the 20th century but survived the Nazi regime, the communist regime, and the Cold War without losing his freedom, his unique identity, and his priceless collection of antiquities.
Besides Charlotte there are nearly 40 characters in this play: Charlotte's family, and friends as well as a Nazi officer, a TV host, and the playwright himself. All these roles are played by one and the same actor.
This is a beautiful and touching story about a person's will to live, also about hope, memory, and almost superhuman courage. At the same time this story is a hymn to each person's individuality.

This play has won a variety of prizes including Drama Desk Prize, Tony Prize, and Pulitzer Prize for the best play in 2004.
