Death of a Communist

Director:
Premiere:
Esietendus 27. oktoobril 2007
The 1940s did not offer any choices for many: to die, be deported or to resist. People hid in the forests to wait for a better tomorrow, but it never arrived. Hendrik Toompere Jr writes and stages a story that tells about people living in border situation. It contains heroes and traitors, love and play, death and happiness, life and fear.

The production is based on the KGB interrogation protocols and memories of the Forest Brothers. Incredible tales that mercilessly reveal the grotesque side of life. What happened to ethical principles? What happened to man's self when the former world collapsed? How is the past written for each of us? How to live your daily life knowing that you might be cut down by a bullet any moment? Should you sit in the forest clutching your gun or dance at the village party under the nose of the KGB? Is the result just tragedy or are jokes being cracked more than ever before?

According to Toompere the production is based on historical documents, but nevertheless forged. Several authentic characters meet in the roles, although in a different manner and with different tasks. And the end is always happy.

Hendrik Toompere Jr has won the best director and best actor award several times. His The Death of a Communist is his first directing co-operation with NO99; he acted in the theatre's opening performance Sometimes it feels as if life has gone by without love. Actors from NO99.
