The songs of Artur Rinne (1910-1984), a hugely popular performer, told about simple, familiar things – home farm, rye fields, forests, an old spinning wheel. These songs accompanied many people through several decades. They united generations and reminded people of human values at difficult and complicated times. During half a century, Rinne was eagerly expected in all corners of the country. He witnessed many different eras in Estonian history, the period of the Republic of Estonia in the 1920s and 1930s, the subsequent powers, war, deportations of people to Siberian camps and the soviet occupation. The film is thus also the story of Estonian people. A story of forced and voluntary choices at radical periods in history.
Artur Rinne’s merry artistic façade concealed numerous doubts, soul-searching and tensions. He enjoyed his fame as a popular singer, but still dreamed about roles on the operatic stage. His private life was quite colourful, worthy of a soap opera...
Through word, music and Artur Rinne’s life, the film tries to understand and remember the time not that long ago, and a man who was part of our life, and that of our parents or grandparents.
