In a town in Northern Finland the paths of three men cross. These men are printer Ilmari Autio, chemistry professor Seppo Pihlaja, and his son, artist Ilmari Pihlaja. Their paths become clearer, run in the same direction for a while, and then separate. The plot is simple and realistic, but at the same time this realism creates a very powerful and captivating feeling.
In this story about a small town and simple men the author Antti Tuuri has expressed the great angst of being, the force, maybe even passion that is hidden behind the Nordic restraint. There is tenderness behind the curtness, love behind practicality, national history behind the simple family legends, everyday life of workers behind the facade of a welfare state. It is a rich and fascinating material full of thoughts and feelings. Antti Tuuri (born in 1944) is a writer with engineering education. His novel A River Flows Through the Town was published in 1977.
Director Ingomar Vihmar has been fascinated by Finnish literature before and staged works by Jussi Niilekselä, Maiju Lassila, and Leea Klemola.
