The action of the play takes place in 1642 in a small village of Reigi in Hiiumaa and also in Tallinn. The protagonists are the pastor of Reigi, Paul Lempelius and his young wife Catharina who falls in love with Jonas Kempe, the new deacon from Stockholm. A rumour spreads in the village according to which Kempe was banished from Stockholm for using witchcraft to make a local pastor's wife fall in love with him. Noticing the closeness between his wife and the new deacon, Lempelius tries to save Catharina and accuses Kempe of using black magic. But the lovers acknowledge their feelings for each other by eloping together. They are caught and found guilty of adultery; both are executed in the central square of Tallinn.
