The seal-hunters island that Gailit writes about could be Kihnu. Or maybe
Ruhnu. But in reality - ethnographically and historically – it is not the case.
Serene Sea is fiction, based on the writer’s imagination and knowledge
of people. It is mostly the people – seal-hunters, the pastor, women and
children in this novel of love and sea are those whom the writer has closely
watched. With great insight he describes the characters’ ideals in life, their
attitude towards traditions and even love. Gailit creates a gallery of finely
depicted characters, and we realise once again – there is no such thing as one
truth.
