"It has to be something like this: Helena is not very pretty, she is 35 and her husband is a priest. They live a peaceful life in the vicarage near the church. Helena's mother who is an outstanding pianist and constantly tours around the world prepares to visit her daughter. Helena dreams of seeing her mother, but their joyful meeting soon becomes a night-time fight. For the first time Helena dares to speak the truth ... Her mother is shocked finding out about the hate and disdain her daughter feels ..." This is what Ingmar Bergman wrote planning his film Autumn Sonata. The film is a subtle and insightful description of the relationship between a mother and a daughter, childhood experiences, the choices to make when being in the roles of both a woman and an artist. The film Autumn Sonata was finished in 1979, starring Ingrid Bergman and Liv Ullmann but this fascinating text has also been performed at theatres across the world.
